What insurance does a dental practice need?

Most dental practices need malpractice coverage for the care they give and a separate package for the business behind it. Here's what each policy does, and how they fit together.

The coverages a dental practice needs

Start with the two policies almost every practice carries, malpractice and a business owner's policy, then add the pieces your size, your lease and your data make necessary.

Dentist malpractice insurance

Claims that your treatment, diagnosis or informed-consent process harmed a patient, plus the defense costs. Dentist malpractice insurance

Business owner's policy

Property, general liability and business income combined in one policy for an eligible office. Business owner's policy

General liability

Non-clinical injuries and damage: the waiting-room slip, the companion hurt in the hallway, an advertising claim. General liability

Property and equipment

The suite, the build-out, chairs, imaging, scanners and sterilization equipment, with equipment breakdown. Property and equipment

Business income

Lost income and continuing expenses while covered damage keeps the practice closed. Business income

Cyber and HIPAA breach

Forensics, patient notification, ransomware response and lost income after a breach. Cyber insurance

Workers' comp

Medical bills and lost wages for team members hurt on the job. Workers' comp

Employment practices liability

Claims by employees or applicants over hiring, firing, harassment or discrimination. Employment practices liability

Employee theft and embezzlement

Theft of the practice's money or property by someone on the payroll. Employee theft coverage

Umbrella

Extra limits above general liability, employer's liability and hired or non-owned auto. Umbrella insurance

Board complaints and license defense

Help with legal costs when a patient files a complaint with the dental board. License defense coverage

Where most practices start

A solo practice in a leased suite usually needs malpractice, a business owner's policy with enough equipment and tenant-improvement limits, workers' comp once there are employees, and cyber if charts and imaging are digital.

A growing group adds employment practices liability, employee theft coverage and an umbrella, and needs a clear answer on how each dentist and the entity share malpractice limits.

A multi-location group needs every office on one schedule, consistent limits across locations and a plan for adding offices mid-term. Coverage for dental groups and DSOs

Coverage questions

What insurance does a dental practice need?
Most practices carry malpractice (professional liability) plus a business owner's policy for property, general liability and income. Most of our states make workers' comp mandatory for a practice with staff, and cyber, employment practices and employee theft coverage fill the gaps a growing practice tends to have.
Does an umbrella policy add to my malpractice limits?
Usually not. The standard ISO commercial umbrella form excludes professional services, dental treatment included, so higher malpractice limits come from the malpractice policy itself. Check the umbrella's exclusions before you count on it.
What's the difference between general liability and malpractice?
General liability covers non-clinical accidents on your premises. Malpractice covers claims tied to treatment and professional judgment. Most GL policies on a dental office exclude professional services, which is why you need both.
